Middlesbrough has confirmed the signing on loan from Brighton striker Aaron Connolly.

The Republic of Ireland international is Boro’s first signing for the January transfer window and will join him until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old has made more than 50 appearances for Brighton and has represented his country from the U17 level to the senior squad.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order this season – having only made one league start for Graham Potter’s side in the 2021-2022 campaign so far.

His only other start came in September in their 2-0 victory over Swansea City in the Carabao Cup. The 21-year-old scored the game-winning two goals.

He told the club’s website: “I’m delighted. This is an area of ​​the pitch that we need to improve on in terms of competing for places.

“He’s a young player, he’s played in the Premier League several times and comes from a technical football club. He also played for his country.

“He gives us the pace, can finish high on the pitch and gives us competition for the players around him.”
