The Italian driver leads championship leader Soria by 10.9 seconds in the one-make Renault Clio Rally5 series after a shortened opening day, which saw two stages canceled due to incidents further down the field.
Argentinian Soria initially led after Friday night’s super special and held on to the lead throughout the morning.
However, a big push from Mazzocchi on the monster Santopadre – Fontana Liri stage put the local rider ahead on the night. Soria could clinch the title this weekend – although that’s highly unlikely given the current standings.
Giorgio Cogni completes the top three 18.6 seconds behind Soria. He was 27.5 seconds ahead of Sergio Fuentes, while Patrik Herczig and Ghjuvanni Rossi completed the standings.
Turkish driver Emre Hasbay had reached fifth place overall before going off the road on SS7. It should resume on Sunday.
