Once again, this CNY apple orchard named America’s best in national poll

LaFayette, NY – For the fourth time in six years, Beak & Skiff Apple Orchard in LaFayette has been named America’s No. 1 Orchard in a nationwide USA Today reader poll.

Beak & Skiff also won first prize among apple orchards in 2015, 2017 and 2020. The annual top 10 orchard list is presented just before the apple picking season each fall by USA Today’s 10Best.com site. 10Best conducts similar surveys across a variety of travel, dining and leisure categories.

“This family-owned orchard has been growing apples since onion farmer George Skiff and dairy farmer Andrew Beak joined forces in 1911 to plant apples on a hill alongside the road. 20 ”, 10Best posted with the list. “The rest, as they say, is history. Gala, McIntosh, Ginger Gold and Paula Red are just a few of the varieties on offer from late August to late October. Live music events, cider festivals, orchard races and a children’s magic show add fun to apple picking.

8. Sky Top Orchard – Flat Rock, North Carolina

9. Huber’s Orchard and Winery – Borden, Ind.

10. Tougas Family Farm – Northborough, Massachusetts

USA Today readers determine the Top 10 by choosing their favorites from a list of 20 orchards across the country nominated by a panel of 10Best experts. There are approximately 7,500 apple orchards in the United States.

Beak & Skiff, located in and around the intersection of Route 20 and Route 80 south of Syracuse, is one of New York’s largest and most prominent apple companies. It is owned and operated by the descendants of the Beak and Skiff families who founded the orchard 110 years ago.

He owns 700 acres of land, of which 400 are cultivated. The apple orchard began in 1911 when onion farmer George Skiff and dairy farmer Andrew Beak joined forces. She helped start the on-site apple retailing and pick-your-own with her original Apple Hill buildings on Lord’s Hill Road (Route 80) in 1975. Since then, she has expanded to include a food center. welcome of visitors, a range of ciders and distilled spirits (created in 1911) and a large concert hall.

More recently, Beak & Skiff has made a big leap into the cannabis industry. She grows and processes industrial hemp to produce CBD and other extracts that don’t contain the psychoactive compound THC. He recently released a CBD infused coffee product.

He also plans to enter the recreational marijuana (THC) business once that industry launches, likely in 2022.

But apples remain the heart of the family business.

It is very gratifying to see this effort and passion resonate with our visitors and we look forward to whatever is to come.

Apple picking season has started at Beak & Skiff and other orchards in central New York City. Varieties available now include Jonamac (for picking) and Jonamac, McIntosh, Gala, Paula Red and Gingergold at the stand, according to the Beak & Skiff Facebook page.
